The Problem
The Modern Youth Sports Tryout Is Operationally Broken
1. Impossible Multitasking
During a drill or scrimmage, one evaluator must simultaneously:
- • Track each athlete’s jersey number
- • Observe multiple players at once
- • Record notes on paper
- • Look down, look up, and not miss anything
- • Remember context about positions, strengths, and weaknesses
This is cognitively unrealistic. Human attention is limited, and paper‑based workflows force evaluators to choose between watching the play or writing the note.
2. Fragmented, Unreliable Data
Old-fashioned pen-and-paper systems introduce structural failures:
- • Notes are inconsistent across evaluators
- • Handwriting varies, gets messy, or is incomplete
- • Observations lack timestamps or drill context
- • Data is scattered across multiple sheets
- • No way to validate accuracy or bias
The result: tryout data becomes subjective, incomplete, and vulnerable to memory errors.
3. Error-Prone Tracking
Evaluators must constantly map: Player → Jersey number → Position → Drill → Performance notes.
One misread jersey number or rushed scribble can misassign an entire evaluation. Multiply that across 40–100 players and the error rate skyrockets.
4. Roster Creation is Guesswork
When it’s time to build a roster, evaluators must:
- • Remember which notes belong to which player
- • Infer which players fit positional needs
- • Reconcile multiple sheets of paper
- • Rely on memory (“Oh yeah, I remember that kid…”)
This is where the system completely collapses. Coaches end up selecting players based on impressions rather than evidence.
5. Matching Needs vs. Talent
A roster isn’t just “pick the best players.” It’s filling gaps, balancing strengths, building chemistry, and ensuring tactical coverage.
Paper notes do not support structured decision-making. They do not map traits to positional requirements, and they do not help evaluators compare players objectively.
6. Assumes Perfect Memory
The entire workflow implicitly relies on the evaluator “remembering everything.” That’s unrealistic and unfair. This is why teams often end up with:
- • Misplaced players
- • Overlooked talent
- • Bias toward players who stood out visually
- • Inconsistent evaluations across coaches
The system isn’t just outdated—it’s fundamentally incapable of producing reliable outcomes.

Behind the Bricks
We’ve Been There.
We are parents, coaches, technologists, and innovators. We know what it’s like to stand on the sidelines in the freezing rain, to stare at messy spreadsheets at midnight, and to debate roster spots over endless group chats.
We love the game. We love the grind. We love watching players grow.
But the administrative chaos? We could do without it. That is why we built EvalBricks.
The Mission
Whether you are a full-time director running a premier academy, a coach with multiple teams and players, or a volunteer coach giving up your Sunday afternoon, the evaluation process shouldn't feel like a second job.
When tryout data gets lost and selections feel subjective, everyone loses. The people dedicating their time to developing our kids deserve better, smarter tools.
We’re here to help you get your time back.
How We Deliver
Dead Simple
No lost clipboards. No corrupt spreadsheets. Just clean, intuitive software designed to work exactly where you do—on the field, on the court, or on the go.
Uncompromisingly Fair
By replacing guesswork with structured, objective data, we make sure every player gets a genuine shot, and every coach has the receipts to back up their decisions.
Actually Fun
Tech shouldn't be a chore. We build tools that are a joy to use, bringing energy back to the pre-season instead of dread.
Our Philosophy
"Better evaluations build better teams.
Better teams build stronger communities."
At the end of the day, EvalBricks exists to take care of the heavy lifting so you can focus on what actually matters: shaping the next generation of players.
The Story Behind the Octopus
People always ask us about our logo—an octopus holding and transforming tentacles into bricks. It’s not just a cool design; it represents exactly how we think about player evaluations.
